PLANE FOUND!
Is it the Steve Fossett plane?
Nobody can know it before an official searcher's confirmation, but
there is no doubt about it: it's definitely an aircraft.

Coordinates:
38.289413,-118.613205
KML file Fossett GeoEye 4

I have already submitted this information by the Amazon's Mechanical Turk site.
Here is the image:

For comparison to the poll photo here is an example of an in-flight plane capture in Google Earth. It's an overhead of a Civil Air Patrol plane at coordinates that were posted by Bill on the MTurk board. Can you see the orange on top of the wings? I can't but then my vision isn't the best.

38 45 27.74, -118 49 38.78

From John B.
Sep 21, 2007 9:45 AM

My name is John from Redmond Washington and I'm using the Amazon-Mechanical Turk service to search for Steve Fossett's missing plane. While analyzing images Tuesday evening, I came across what looks very much like a downed plane in the newly refined search area.

See the attached image taken from the original Mechanical Turk hit, 030002222_8.jpg. The greyish white plane image is just left of center. The area is 3.5 miles west of the northern end of Walker Lake and Highway 95. The area is about 50 miles due north of Mono Lake.

I submitted the picture via the Mechanical Turk service Tuesday evening at ~9:30pm PST, as an image that needs to be investigated. The original coordinates from Mechanical Turk are 38.757706, -118.827438. But when looking up the image on the latest Google Earth kml file later that evening, the site in theattached photo was positioned just slightly to the West at 38.757606, -118.828338.

Today revisiting the site with the latest kml(http://s3.amazonaws.com/Fossett-GE4/GeoEye_4/index.kml ), I can no longer find the original terrain from the hit. Why is there so much difference from KML to KML? Does anyone have a good process for locating the original site?

Thanks,
John

This is a possible light plane wreck. From the latest KML overlay. The object is not found on old GE pix. Wing (s) appear to be east to west. Since it is mostly white looking it may be the bottom of the wing. There appears to be freshly disturbed soil to the south of the object. Whatever it is, it is too regular and straight to be a natural object. Steel tube and fabric aircraft of the size of the Citabria do not weigh very much (1200 to 1660 lbs.) and unless driven vertically into the ground tend not disintegrate and because of the light weight and low inertia, do not leave a long debris field.

Conjecture: In the above photo you can see an unusual clearing on the top of 2 ridges to the south of where I believe a wreck is located. If the trees are pinion pine 10-15 feet in height, it looks like large boulders in an arrangement. What ever - they may have attracted the attention of Steve - and notice that where the wreck is located it is generally on the way back towards the pass leading back to the Flying M Ranch. It is on the down slope. If one was flying rather close to the ridge tops a surface wind can cause downdrafts on the downwind slope - which could explain how/why the wreckage is where it is.

Take a look at 38.631363,-118.860397 About the right size, looks to be an intact plane nose down twisted to port after 50 yards skidding from the south-east. The fuselage looks blue, but the wing looks white, so this might not be Steve's plane, but it probably needs checking out.

38 28 55.67, -119 24 18.23 -- Checked Yet?

From Amber McKinney - Nebraska
September 14, 2007 4:59 PM

It is located 35 miles Northeast of Sonora Pass, in the Sweetwater Mountians in between west walker river and east walker river, Just off of Interstate 395 but no one has bothered to look. I have been trying to tell the searchers since Wednesday even Foxnews ignore my emails. I am not sure how to post these latitude and longitude numbers but I'll try: 38 28' 55.67" N 119 24' 18.23" W or -38 28' 55.67" N -119 24' 18.23 W. The plane is facing Northwest and it's on top of trees. It's tail is broke off which my father who builds RC planes says this plane's beacon would have not gone off. It also looks like the cockpit had a small flame burn. If it is Fossett's plane I am really sad they have not heard my emails or phone calls.
